This came in with MIL on
Had a look through the archives and found some helpful info. I checked the 10 amp fuse under the bonnet (in fuse box) as this also controls the cooling fan
Fuse had blown, replaced fuse and blew straight away, disconnected manifold flap motor and this time fuse ok
Replaced manifold flap motor situated under the EGR valve (the manifold flap is for a smooth shut down of engine when turned off)
Codes cleared and all ok
Manifold flap motor was £271.34 with only a 5% discount from TPS 1 hour to fit
Hi Pete, The manifold flap is avaialable from GSF, genuine Pierburg unit, (same as VAG) approximately £100 less off memory, charge the VAG price for it - looks identical to the VAG unit. I've had the fan packs fail as well, blowing the same fuse & have had a Golf & a Touran where the fuse had blown & had inop fans & a shorted manifold flap as well. Find the culprit for the blown fuse, disconnect it & run a actuator test on the other component on this fuse (F8)to make sure the diagnosis is complete.
I did check with Camberley Auto Factors and they also sold the genuine Pierburg unit cheaper, the customer did opt for the dealer part
This was the first one of these I have done, but while I was doing the job a customer of mine came in with his 2008 Seat 2.0 TDi 125,000 miles and said this morning the MIL came on and the message came up on the dash to take to a garage, he said it was running on slightly when he turned the engine off. He then produced a crumpled bit of paper from his pocket with "Manifold Flap" on it, he had been on Google all morning. I told him I could not comment until I had done a scan and he needed to book it in, I think he was on a free brain picking mission.......he left non the wiser
It is a common fault, so are the fan packs. Both faults produce the same symptom of fuse 8 blowing & logging the DTC's for Manifold Flap & Fan control. The cause is different, sometimes it is the manifold flap, sometimes the fan pack - but each fault is probably equally as common.
On the A3, Audi sell a modified reduced price fan pack with both fans, VW aren't so polite - they charge full price for individual Master & slave fans.
The reason I posted was to make UKAT aware that the fuse can blow for 2 different reasons & both circuits need to be checked before condemning the manifold flap.
