I now check nearly all alternators with this type of pulley during service, but normally the change of the sound of the engine at idle is a give away (slight knocking).
I recently had a car come in that had recently had a new tensioner fitted (by a "friend" of his) and I told him why it had broken but he ignored my advice to his cost as it broke again a couple of months later.

For anyone not aware, the clutch fitted to PSA vehicles is not available seperately from main dealer but GSF can supply them and they are the same make as fitted to VAG
