VW Polo1.9D 2003 - Broken auxiliary drive belt tensioner - Fixed #

Hi All

Bit basic but worth a mention

This came in just over a week ago with the auxiliary drive belt tensioner broken off. We replaced the tensioner and bolt

Came back in yesterday with the tensioner bolt broken (sheared)

On further investigation found the alternator pulley had seized causing undue stress on the tensioner

Replace alternator pulley

I have seen this many times on Passat and Audi diesel models. Another sign being the chirping sound that the new belt didn't cure. I always check all of the drive belt components and usually find most of them want changing by the time the belt is looking like it's near the end of it's life.

Same as Liam, I've seen the seized OAP pulleys take out belt tensioner retaining bolts & on occasion shred the belt & derail the cambelt on VAG diesels.

Hi Peter,
I now check nearly all alternators with this type of pulley during service, but normally the change of the sound of the engine at idle is a give away (slight knocking).
I recently had a car come in that had recently had a new tensioner fitted (by a "friend" of his) and I told him why it had broken but he ignored my advice to his cost as it broke again a couple of months later.

For anyone not aware, the clutch fitted to PSA vehicles is not available seperately from main dealer but GSF can supply them and they are the same make as fitted to VAG
