Samuel Alcock & Co. "Commerce" #04 Pattern #6210 Posted by Mimi Alberu on October 19, 2024, 12:29 am This listing in the database is for a blue 9" plate. There is a purple plate in the database, "Commerce" #06, but with a different center image. I recently acquired a purple bowl with the same border and center image, but with a beaded rim, not scalloped. The maker's mark is the same. I found this bowl in the swap shop at my town's recycling center. I knew right away it was 19th c. transferware because I've been a collector for years, but wasn't familiar with this maker's mark. (I primarily collect Mulberry ware.) The bowl was with a set of six plates that I'll describe in a separate post. My question is, how do members submit patterns to be added to the database?

Good find at the recycling center! Both the Commerce and Lausanne Villa patterns date to about the 1830s or 1840s, and are typical of patterns from that time in being available in a variety of colors, instead of just blue as had been the case in the 1820s and before. We don't necessarily need the same central pattern in different colors though some pattern records do have them. "Commerce" #04 Pattern #6210" Hi Len, it's always interesting what people consider disposable. I've found a Leeds platter there and several pieces of Homer Laughlin ironstone. I've found a Mulberry Vincennes wash basin and Temple bowl literally on the side of the road with an Oriental rug. Also found a Corean wash basin for $5 at a yard sale. I started collecting Mulberry when I found a large piece of plate rim when planting a garden at my 1834 farmhouse in the 1980s.It turned out to be a match for a Corean plate at a dealer in Fitzwilliam NH. You know what happens when you get the bug. I started going to Brimfield, got three volumes on Flow Blue patterns and pottery marks, all downhill from there. If I find anything not in the database I'll let you know. Thanks!

Those things just weren't worth anything to the people who gave them away or tossed them out, just as I imagine we have gotten rid of things we didn't value but other people would. At least those early buys sparked a longtime interest and hobby!
