Re: T J & J Mayer "Rural Scenery"
The reference to Prize Medal 1851 has nothing to do with Rural Scenery pattern. It is a generic backstamp used on many different patterns. Mayer won prizes for shapes and forms of wares at the 1851 Exhibition, not for patterns. Exhibition prices were almost exclusively awarded for the design of shapes and forms or for technical skill, making huge vases or applying ornate and intricate decoration or for the actual body that wares were made from.
I cannot recall an instance of a printed pattern achieving prize winning status at any exhibition, but would welcome being corrected if I am wrong.
Rural Scenery pattern can be assumed to have gone on sale in 1842 once the design had been registered.
