...in the last election. It broke overwhelmingly blue in this one. That's largely hispanics. They voted for a Texas born hispanic and recoiled at Abbott and Trump's border/ICE activity.

He lost suburban whites. He lost ground with rural whites.

What I think happened is that MAGA folks haven't been able to admit that Trump is incredibly unpopular outside of that group and him sucking up all the air in the room had absolutely attrocious down ballot implications.

He's spent years making everything about him and when everything turned against him the scattershot was enormous.

In the first term he stuck mostly to the traditional GOP policy mix of tax cuts and deregulation, with a smattering of tariffs. It worked. In the second he went all-in on tariffs in April 2025, and even after his tariff defeat at the Supreme Court he continued to impose them in different ways. The public didn’t approve from the start, and among Hispanics the disapproval for tariffs in October was 81%....

The Iran war added to the cost problem on fuel prices in particular. But the bigger trouble with the war is that Mr. Trump has never explained his strategy or been consistent in his war aims. He changed, sometimes by the day, on whether peace or more war was at hand. Voters have stopped supporting the war because they aren’t sure Mr. Trump knows how to win it.

Voters also rebelled against Mr. Trump’s seeming preoccupation with his pet personal causes—the ballroom, the arch—and how he and his family have grown richer during the second term. Most important for the GOP Congress, the man in the White House failed to provide the leadership and salesmanship to help the party’s narrow majorities do more than the one big tax bill. But the voters said in resounding fashion that the Presidency isn’t about him.

I'm a little surprised at how much it translated to local elections.

My thoughts on the reason it translated.
1) Economics - people are being priced out of everything right now. My wife love Bon Jovi. She wanted to take the kids to see Bon Jovi next year. $250/ticket for a concert, to see 60 year old has beens. Insane.
2) Iran - people rightly/wrongly tie the inability of Trump to get prices under control to what is happening in Iran.
3) Palestine. I don't think most of America is anti-Israel, but I think they see the pictures and say... ok, enough is enough. Trump allowed the anti-Jewish groups to frame Israel as murdering kids and innocent. From my standpoint, Trump needed to be very clear from the beginning to put pressure on Palestine that the military action will stop as soon as the Palestinian people hold an election to remove Hamas from power, and agree to a two state solution with clear repercussions for violation of the agreement.

We will see what happens. The Democratrs in this area all ran right of their GOP opponents. So one of two things happen. They are exposed for their lies since they will not codify the tax cuts and gas prices stay high, or they actually do what they say they are going to do which would buck their party and the country come back to sanity because bipartisanship has returned.

I think we all know which one is going to happen.
