Sigh. School shooting over Uber Eats delivery?

I'm out of it enough not to realize some high school kids use food delivery to get their school lunch. Really?? Well, there's this from a local HS:

Montgomery County Police identified and charged a suspect with first-degree assault in connection with Wednesday’s shooting at Silver Spring’s James Hubert Blake High School.

Police identified Djibia Gombo, 19, of Silver Spring, on Thursday. Detectives continue to investigate the incident....

After a fight in the school’s parking lot, a 17-year-old male student showed up with a gunshot wound at a local hospital. In a letter to “Blake Families” on Wednesday, school officials said the student is in stable condition.

The school opened on a three-hour delay on Thursday, and students are no longer permitted to take lunch off campus or allowed to use delivery services, such as Uber Eats, to bring food to school, according to the letter....

All the aromas, and can you focus on the class while you are eating? What is wrong with between class or at actual food periods? It’s not like students are going wire to wire with intense study.

And the possible showing off with expensive food unavailable to some classmates.

what happens if there's an emergency, a school shooting or something, and I have to hear from my kid immediately???

Meanwhile, all of the data/research shows that devices in the classroom are negatively affecting learning.

I won't speak for other schools. I can only speak for my north suburban experience. But any time teachers attempt to implement restrictions, it's met with parent opposition and admin generally sides with the parents.

There is no discipline anymore.

My kids were in school on 9/11 and when the "DC Shooter" was at large and for weather emergencies. We managed.

I'm responding to myself here...but this happened to me this week.

Mother of a student calls. I have been emailing counselors, support teams, the parents for months. Student has not been in class since February 6th. Yes, almost 3 months - mostly unexcused. Mom wanted me to pass the kid. Gave every excuse in the world and figured he could write a few papers and pass the class. She didn't care that he was not present for any learning at all this semester. School wouldn't tell her no. I finally told her that I couldn't ethically pass her kid. School was too cowardly to draw the line.

We have lost standards of excellence, lines of responsibility, and measures of accountability.
