How do you work at a firm....

Where the partners send out directives to the staff about what is needed for us to review returns, then go behind your back and tell the staff not to worry about including the documents they said were needed?

Fast forward to me reviewing returns as the deadline approaches, and I see that certain documents that are needed are not in the file. I ask the staff, and they tell me they were told they did not need to do it per the partners.

I complain to the partner who put out the directive 2 weeks ago; he is combative and says we can talk about it after the 15th. Well, it turns out it was he who was telling the staff they were not needed.

WTF? I cannot review a return with these documents. It takes less than a minute to print the documents out of the corporate returns and into the individual files.

- CPA exam watered down to nothing

- Offshoring so these kids are competing with Philippines and India, which has killed wages

- Boomers pulled ladder up 3 decades ago and there is almost no one who is even moderately fucking competent between the ages of 28 and 50

- Massive simultaneous demand spike due to 4/15 deadline makes the job absolute hell for shit wages for two months

Good luck, bro. I don't know how the hell most of these shops outside of the national firms are going to hold together over the next ten years.

One Accountancy teacher back in the day was Kenneth Perry: a genuine Kentucky Colonel.

Get into the rhythm of the problem !! (Repeating decimals were a good thing.)

Guy got a 75: didn't waste one answer!

Don't know an answer? Draw a line, they'll give you a point. Make it look like a "T", they'll think you know accounting and give you five points.

Tonight we write!! (That meant a practice exam that night.)

And he was fond of giving out incredibly tough questions: How many of you got that right? How many knew what that question meant? (Bold people would hold up their hands.) LIAR!!! (Then he'd tell you the question was from like 40 years ago. His point was not to get hung up on a question you didn't know.)

All the people who got great scores from say NIU, wherever else in the state other than UIUC: yeah, I taught the head of Accounting at NIU...

He showed up at each site where they gave the exam in CU; shook hands as people walked in, gave you a little pep talk...

my next move. I have had conversations to get out by 55, and I just turned 50. I need something that will get me a pension after 10 years, so I have more security in retirement. My firm is not going to be around in 10 years when all the partners, who are my age, are ready to retire, and there is no one to take over. They will be forced to sell, and I am not going to be around for that.

as their wealth management guy. He quit and took his book when they tried to jam him because he was so accretive to the business as the rest of the firm was tanking. The firm collapsed a year after he left under the weight of deferred comp obligations to retired partners and utter inability to hire any new partners. He says that the whole industry outside the rarified air is just utterly cooked.

My firm will be gone in 10 years. We have no young people who would be capable of leading. In fact the 5 partners right now have a hard time leading. They are going to have to sell the firm there are no other options.

I think the industry will always be needed, but the question is how to adapt to changing times. The best accountants are proactive and get out ahead of the problems. The issue is that too many are reactive and wait for the problem to occur and then react to the issue. We also get a bad wrap in that we are simply the ones who report the results, so being reactive is second nature. There are a few of us that are better at seeing the trends and being able to convince management to adjust course.

I am ranting.

It is not a big deal, but having a guaranteed income of about 15k-20k would be nice. If I got a state job, my pension after 10 years would be 20% of my final year salary. I would command at least 80k-100k right now.

I am also in talks about a couple board positions or even a commissioner/representative at the local/state level.

I am part of a sports association that pays officials through some formal employment organization, in what appears to done the right way. The head is looking to set up an alternate path where other officials would work for cash. More money for them if it all goes unreported.

This bothers me a bit. And stated so casually, that it would be good for recruiting.

I couldn't say anything from my position.

paying people off the books all of asudden will be a major red flag. Even if this is a non-profit you will not be able to report the expenses without the IRS catching on.
