As a huge Apollo fan, I find the Artemis program rather uninteresting

The first trip to the moon (Apollo 8) was one of the most daring acts ever, and it worked. I don't think many people know (or care) how incredibly risky that was.

Of course they highlighted the diversity in the NYT story:

Unlike the Apollo astronauts, who were all white men, this mission sets a number of firsts: Mr. Glover of NASA will be the first Black man to venture into deep space and Ms. Koch of NASA will be the first woman to do so, while Mr. Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency will be the first person on a moon mission who is not an American. Mr. Wiseman of NASA is the commander of Artemis II.

He was the best grandpa anyone could have wanted.

He fought in the Cavalry in WWI. Spent the rest of his life farming in Western Illinois (Fulton County).

The two of us were hand digging a trench for drainage tile across a field and I was 16, perfectly fit and wearing shorts, and a t-shirt. He is wearing overalls, a long sleeved shirt and of course his hat. I'm sweating buckets and he is not even breaking a sweat. He would have been around 77 at that time.

He didn't believe we landed on the moon. He thought it was all staged.

Incredible expense and constantly missed deadlines and targets. And when the focus of the mission for a while was the diversity of the crew rather than the mission itself, eff that.

When we finally land on the moon again, there will be great focus on the diversity of the crew and a big debate over who will be the first one on the ground. Remember, HAL "became operational" in Urbana in the 1990s. The C-U stamp club got permission to offer a special cancellation, and sent offers at least to Computer Science grads of Illinois. I bought a couple. Very cool, IMO.

And I actually dreamed about being on the Mars team and writing a book "We Three." Little did I know we were going to stop doing anything, nor did I appreciate some of the complexity.
