The massive influx of cash has made it next to impossible to buy unless you have two very large incomes and / or stock options.
It’s also why the people fleeing California narrative doesn’t square for the Bay Area. People are fleeing because it’s increasingly unaffordable because of insane demand and limited stock.
In the 90s when my in-laws were trying to sell their first house it took almost a year. There were just no takers. My wife’s grandfather snapped up property on the 1960s and 1970s like he was cleaning up around the house.
We’re just unfathomably lucky to be the generation that’s going to be the beneficiary of lucky timing.

Most people in both are "from somewhere".
I get that you have a great thing going where you are and enjoy it. I can understand the difference you have vs. the home in Van Nuys that sparked the conversation. I can understand why you'd want to stay vs. starting over.
I can also understand why so many young families our age have moved to Idaho. It's insanely safe. You get 10/10 schools in great cities. You can let your kids go around town by themselves. You have big city amenities but also unlimited outdoors stuff. It's a planned and sanitized disney version of America. Lot's of people want that. It can also be had for "cheap". You could sell for $2M and buy one of these homes for $1M and now you have the other $1M invested earning an average of 8-10% annually. And I pulled homes in Eagle, where I'd pick if I moved to Boise area. There are other places in Star, Meridian, or Boise that are cheaper yet.....or you could go the other way and get an insane house for 1.5-2M. Then you add in the fact that most of these people moving already know 5 other families who've already made the jump and it's easy for them to follow.

Anyways, I get why you want to stay, but I also get why many want to leave.
