Illinois, Chicago in particular, is shedding lower income residents while gaining upper income residents.
Some are going to Indiana, others to Texas, Florida, and Georgia. So yes, those states are gaining population but they are gaining low earners or seniors that don't produce/create other jobs.
Illinois has 500k households making $200k or more, 3X Indiana, which has 160k, despite Illinois only being 1.8X the population of Indiana.
Illinois' long term prospects are much improved if the population continues to trend younger, more educated, and richer.
