i use an app called "thescore"
you can identify favorite teams or sports (or conferences/divisions) and filter the results that appear. i understand this might overwhelm someone such as your friend who is new to apps. realistically i think he would be best served by getting a computer (because of the larger screen and keyboard). its unfortunate, but i think there will always be a certain percentage left behind when technology trends away. we saw some of it at u of i recently when they converted to primarily digital tickets. it was just fine for most fans (easy transfer and saved the old dread of, 'did i remember the tickets?'... but for some old timers without a smart phone, it was likely alienating (i believe physical tickets were still available in person at the office, but it would have created extra hoops to jump).
