and in reality, i suppose it still is. but perhaps not as absurd as you might think.

espn once was the main (if not only) gateway to highlights and sports scores/news-- all of which is now immediately available on demand online in a million different ways. so to me, their unique place in the market has been kind of cucked and theyve been in a downward spiral regardless (the wokeness simply accelerated it). im not really a tv guy anyway, but outside of live sports i havent flipped to espn in over a decade. and God bless anyone tuning in for these "get up" or whatever panel shows (i digress)...

anyway, my point is... they used to have the sunday night baseball thing on espn. ok. when was the last time you or someone you know watched sunday night baseball for something other than your local team? perhaps your experience is different, but i probably saw a few innings of the cubs on their the last 10 years... certainly i --nor anyone i know--was tuning in for 9 innings of 2 random teams, which is mostly what they offer. my guess is that the wnba package, while not a draw either, will at least be substantially cheaper. and in that sense, it might be good business.

I think my highest ever recorded velocity was in 2004 at a minor league game when I was 24. Hit 74 and 76 without having been throwing much recently. Really wonder if I had worked harder at baseball if I could have played on a D3 team like Milliken or IL Wesleyan.

I liked basketball better but was not nearly good enough there to even dream about playing past high school.

junior: 6’1. 88+fb. 76-80 offspeed. walks per 9 < 4
senior. 6’2+. 91+ fastball. 80+ offspeed. walks per 9<3

and then it just gives you a chance. of the 3 i know that met this all lasted a year at d1 before dropping down.

slow curveballs are the shit. even at most good high schools. they suck past that. the best d2+ hitters murder that shit. need tight fast late break curve

control. what most think is adequate control isn’t. the d1 kids in highschool are walking almost no one. because they have real control.

height and weight will eventually catch up with nearly every prospect. especially righties. eventually you have to be 6’2+ 205+ to get to the next level. it’s just physics.

played against one kid in oklahoma a couple times that made it to the bigs (jobe). a couple of “our” kids started out in d1 but quickly dropped down for playing time and careers wrapping up now

hitters can pretend a little longer but pitching is truly a unicorn. extreme longshot especially in the 5’10-6’2 range. need to be 6’2-6’6 200+ with all the tools to expect to sniff d1 action.

Will be #1 by mid season. Hoping to make all conference. He's doing great. He had realistic goals of pitching on the college level.

I say college level because his trajectory would be low D1 or below. Which is fine. But if you're not high D1, then the competition is outrageous. But we'll see.

Plan is to do almost exclusively coach pitch to these 6 year olds so no tees unless they’re struggling.

He’s got a good arm. Will be fun to see how he develops in the different sports he’s starting to play.

But he has great command in his fastball with movement. So he paints corners and sneaks fastballs under their hands. Maddux like. He’s working on a change and that will become a plus pitch for him. But he never walks kids. He induces soft contact. Weak grounders and lazy fly balls and pop ups.

His lack of strikeout power is going to hurt him big but we’re going to work on velocity and we have reason to believe that he will be in the low 90s by senior year.

How’s that for a scouting report?

At a carnival / amusement park, the place had a radar gun. You threw from a flat concrete surface. Come close enough to predicting your speed, you win. I did. I think it was upper 40s.

I had no ego involved where I would fling it at top speed to see what I'd get. Guns were rare then. Instead I just threw with a reasonable motion where I felt under control.

Recently the Washington Post practically eliminated its sports department. The print paper now has no scores or standings or box scores. I thought they might keep them digitally. Not even there. Like the Maryland BB game this week had an AP story and no box.

My friend who is unsophisticated about the internet has no computer and uses his phone only for email and texts and maybe a few odds and ends.

He's a big sports fan - especially MLB - who subscribes to the Post. He's now wondering what to do.

I will show him how to get to espn.com, and today I downloaded the espn and mlb apps to my iPhone and will show him what they do. If he wants those apps, maybe he'll be ok. The apps look to be very busy, and the browser on my computer with its large screen is much better for seeing a lot of scores and busywork at once.

you can identify favorite teams or sports (or conferences/divisions) and filter the results that appear. i understand this might overwhelm someone such as your friend who is new to apps. realistically i think he would be best served by getting a computer (because of the larger screen and keyboard). its unfortunate, but i think there will always be a certain percentage left behind when technology trends away. we saw some of it at u of i recently when they converted to primarily digital tickets. it was just fine for most fans (easy transfer and saved the old dread of, 'did i remember the tickets?'... but for some old timers without a smart phone, it was likely alienating (i believe physical tickets were still available in person at the office, but it would have created extra hoops to jump).
