Pett, Woods and Hammond all have another season remaining on their current contracts - so can’t see them going anywhere. Only Conlon whose contract is up. Expect him to be offered a new deal, so can’t see much change coming in central midfield except needing a decent advanced midfielder / no 10 to replace Payne. I like Kyle McAllister from Forest Green - who we were supposedly interested in a year ago. Out of contract there now and must surely be looking for a move up to L2 now that FGR have failed to get promoted, again. Might be good mates with Robson (don’t know - just speculating) which might swing it for us.
Drummond’s contract is up. Would like to see him stay. Whether or not he does will no doubt depend on the player’s vs club’s respective ideas of what wages he is worth. Suspect that will be a toss-up. Would like to see Taylor stay, as backup. If he is out of contract at Villa now, likely to be released and we may have a chance. If still under contract there likely to be on significantly higher wages than we can afford to match.
Up front, hopefully Burnley might be prepared to release Mellon jr. Rather less likely now that they have been relegated to Championship. Was never getting close to their Premier
League first team squad but they might want to keep him as a potential fringe squad player at Championship level. Probably time to say thanks & goodbye to Garner. Paddy Madden who has been mentioned elsewhere & a couple of years younger might be a suitable replacement. Kavanagh has been a major disappointment from what little we have seen of him - but is MM prepared to admit that he has made another serious mistake over a striker who we apparently paid a significant fee for (same as Harratt)? Doubt whether anyone else would now pay a fee for him, on top of his wages - contracted for another 2 years. Might have to try to send him out on loan to make room for a decent replacement. Perhaps Mark Hughes likes him and would be prepared to take him? Perhaps not.
Defence looks like the area needing most significant attention. Agreed that if we are serious about going for promotion next season, we could do with letting both Caprice & Ogle go. And replacing with a right back of similar calibre to Robson. Anybody like to see Rob Hunt back at the club? Otherwise perhaps Joel Senior? Or Tennai Watson (Barnsley).
Strong rumours that Manny Monthe has decided to move on. I hope not, but if he is going, we clearly need a strong left-sided centre back to replace him. Perhaps Jack Shepherd from Barnsley.
Finally, I would expect a Championship club to come in with an offer of £500k for Mat Hudson. And the board to be unable to resist. Is Donaghy good enough to step up to first choice? Done very little wrong when been given a chance. I would expect us to go for a much more experienced keeper on a free (e.g. Ben Amos - Port Vale) with an open mind about who would be first choice next season.
