I cannot count how many times I have heard and read the claim that period repair manuals describe and illustrate the use of open flame for loosening the sections of celluloid pens. It is so deeply embedded in the lore of our hobby that it is unquestioned common knowledge.
But it's false.
Despite the pervasiveness of this belief, no evidence has ever been presented, as far as I am aware, to support it. None.
I (again) challenge anyone to post a description and depiction of using open flame to loosen a celluloid section in a repair manual.
