He is a big fan of Dostoevsky--his only film as a director adapts THE GRAND INQUISITOR, a short made in 2008 with Marsha Hunt--but I doubt that he's seen all the films made from the novels and short stories. I doubt anyone has--there are 323 entries for Dostoevsky at IMDB, with four more "upcoming!" It's an interesting list, and he's a fan of FEAR--but not of "slow cinema," as you'll see in his review of the Filipino adaptation that he thinks follows Bela Tarr off a cliff. https://www.imdb.com/list/ls095313185/?ref_=uspf_t_7 All in all, there's impressive historical range here (all the way back to the silents, all the way up to the 2010. Calling Robert Bresson a "New Wave director," however, is more than a stretch... |
