Just one man's opinion, and the author occasionally has had some unusual ones, but here are the ratings of the films above from Mike Keaney's British Film Noir Guide, which helped me navigate the vast offerings back when noir from across the pond was being rediscovered and reinvigorated.
Green for Danger ****
It Always Rains On Sunday ***
Odd Man Out **** 1/2
Obsession ***
The Small Back Room *** 1/2
Night and the City **** 1/2
The Woman In Question ***
Pool Of London ***
Yield to the Night * 1/2 (ouch)
Hell Drivers *** 1/2
Time Without Pity *** 1/2
All Night Long ***
Mike Keaney used to hang out and contribute at the Blackboard many moons ago and perhaps he still lurks. His guides on film noir often included films that didn't really qualify as film noir but contained what he believed to be significant elements, and I'd be surprised to see if someone could come up with a film he doesn't review in one of his books. Guess I'll be saving Yield To The Night til the end!
Mike does anoint four five-star films, by the way: Gaslight, The Third Man, Seance On A Wet Afternoon and Great Expectations. Like I said, all-inclusive. There are nine more he awards 4 1/2 stars and 27 (!) he rates 4 out of 5 stars. Only three of are in this program, so Criterion clearly has plenty of room for a program sequel.
