Noir in 1967
I have some impressions whose validity can only be tested by film scholarship. One is that French noir kept on going in the 60s through thick and thin, and some of it like Melville’s may have influenced what was to come out of America. Even if that influence is absent, the revival of American-made noir sees an upward ratchet in 1967, I believe, and one earlier sign was Harper (1966), also Blowup, The Chase, and the spy movies like Quiller and The Deadly Affair. These all kept alive noir’s “edginess” and perhaps suggested paths to come. In 1967, the ones with potential influence include Point Blank, The Naked Runner, Zigzag, The Borgia Stick, In Cold Blood, Wait Until dark and Warning Shot. Even though only a tv-movie, The Borgia Stick is remarkable. Each film suggested new and vital story possibilities that could flower in subsequent years.
