This (again) preserves the 60s noir lists that were in danger of rolling off the edge of the Blackboard's cliffs...might be worthwhile to try and annotate these lists a bit, including any needed additions, subtractions, and corrections.
Noir in 1969
I’ve included some dramas that are possible, ones that I think have a noir flavor. The list has some Italian films from the giallo and poliziotteschi films that I’ve seen and reviewed that I consider fully noir, and one of these also is drawn from someone else’s list. This 1969 list has the usual quotient of French and Japanese films as well as spy films. One western appears here because it was the list of someone else.
My thought that the mid-60s may have begun a revival of noir in American film is rejected numerically when we look at the output in 1967-68-69. However, it takes several years of pre-production before a film gets made anyway. In 1970 there are 28 American and British noirs, 38 in 1971 and 34 in 1972. By then, there was a clear rebound in noir output. I think one might usefully ask what these films were and what their antecedents may have been.
