I should add that The Web and Alias Nick Beal are also getting their first-ever blu-ray releases on the same date, and not that I own any stock, but Kino-Lorber is selling them at 40 percent off if you order from them with free shipping on orders over $50.
Now here's a release I wasn't expecting -- the very rare Larceny from 1948 is getting a blu-ray/DVD release with July 14 street date. It got a showing at Noir City SF several years back with the only known existing 16mm print at the time. A pirated copy has been circulating for years in very poor, bleached-out condition. I have not heard or read any details of a discovery or restoration ... anyone else?
Anyway, it's a big cross of the list of rare noirs out there that still haven't received any kind of upgrade, so here's hoping, because while it's not a noir classic, it's a highly entertaining ride from start to finish. John Payne and Dan Duryea star, but it's a svelte Shelley Winters who steals the show. Actually, it's William Bowers who steals the show with some crackling dialogue.
The extras appear to be skimpy but who cares if we're getting this film in decent shape. Ah, there is a commentary by a "Eddy von Mueller." I thought, OK, that's pretty funny. But there actually is an Eddy von Mueller, and it's not the guy you're thinking of. This person is a filmmaker and educator from Atlanta, Ga.
Really now, what are the odds?
