Moving players out before bringing new players in

Posted by HeathHatter on 19/8/2025, 14:17:43

There seems to be a lot of talk about the need to move players out before we bring new bodies in. I don't think I agree with this approach.

As things stand we have 22 over-21 outfield players (see thread below). However this includes Adebayo, who is extremely unlikely to feature until late in the season and therefore shouldn't be named in the squad for now. It also includes Holmes and Nakamba who, frankly, need to be paid off if no-one comes in for them. This gives us 3 spaces which we could, and should, utilise to make signings.

In addition it's perfectly possible that Mengi, Woodrow and maybe one or two others might leave. And what about Jabob Brown? Is he realistically likely to feature any time soon or is he another, like Adebayo, who perhaps doesn't need to be given a place in the squad for now?

Personally I wouldn't be heartbroken if Nordas or Chong left but it looks fairly likely that both will stay. Even so, I would argue that we have space for at least 3, and possibly as many as 4 or 5 new additions.

I'd like to think that we are actively pursuing a number of new signings- particularly in view of the number of unfit or injured players we have. We'll see.

Hate to tell you this, but the club don't care whether you agree with the approach or not...

The point that many are overlooking is that we have players on Premier League contracts and we are now a League One club.

That's an accounting nightmare, especially as several of those players (Adebayo, Nakamba, Brown) can't actually play while probably costing more than a quarter of a million quid a month between them.

The parachute payments are covering this financial disaster (which is the intention of them). The £40m Premier League parachute isn't for spending on international strikers on more big wages.

Agree it is an accounting nightmare, but one that the club and most fans could see coming 12 months ago. Businesses plan, our recruitment strategy has been poor and appears to be now stuck in reactive mode, leaving MB with more squad issues again.

Sad thing is if they dont arrest this slid this season, we have squandered such a lot of momentum and advantage.

Yes, I understand that, and I'm not suggesting that the club should be making rash, expensive signings. But it would be madness to go into September with only 18 or 19 over-21 players that are actually any use to us.

Yes, that is what parachute payments are for. Most fans do understand that, but we also have a surplus of around £5-7m from outgoings v incomings.
Spending some of that on a couple of players could happen without needing to move anyone else on.

Surely the time has long passed where we should have said to players that want out that their agents have until a given date to sort a transfer out otherwise they stay. Said players/agents should also be told that if they stay they will almost certainly not be given a squad number and they will be expected to train with the youth

In which case they'll just stink the place out and fuck any chance of fostering an atmosphere more conducive to positive performances and results.

But, yeah, over there in simple answer land.

I think we will have 2/3 New players by the end of the window and probably 2 gone.

Don’t be surprised to see Mengi on the bench tonight.
