    Torn ACL

Posted by Carling on 12/8/2025, 13:25:18

Anyone on here had a partially torn ACL, (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) and not had surgery to repair but gone onto lead a fairly normal active lifestyle? Cheers.

      Hi Carling,
My 17 yo son snapped his ACL and damaged the other 2 ligaments after being on the receiving end of a bad challenge.
Outside of football he was a national level sprinter and triple jumper.
I naively thought that yes we would have wait for an NHS op, but I am getting close to 12 months and I’ve not heard anything.
The private opp, given the level of damage would be circa 15k.
It would be the carried out by the same surgeon who carried out our NHS consultation nearly 12 months ago, and prob would be done within a week if I had the funds.
Doesn’t seem right at all (with all the publicised waste, weight loss jabs etc), but time is a healer and he has had to adjust to his new way of life.

That is a tough story Squire for such a young promising lad of yours. The difference between NHS and private waiting times is just staggering.
I sincerely hope he gets the op he needs eventually and gets to the high standards he reached pre injury again.
Youth teenage football is tough arena rife with reckless and life changing injuries. I do know myself. All the very best mate.

I tore my ACL playing football when I was 32.
Never had the operation as I couldn't afford the time off work (was six months back then).
Retired from football and took up managing an adult team then a kds team.
I have been able to do everyday activities for most of the 30+ years since (including playing golf), but now have moderate arthritis in my knee. Still OK for short walks and gentle exercise but if I overdo it it swells up and I end up on anti-inflammatory medication.

I tore it when I was a teenager and doctors said that as I was young surgery was not necessary and physio was sufficient. It never properly healed and I kept re-rupturing it until I got surgery and, touch wood, it's been absolutely fine ever since.

This is second hand so I don't know exactly what the injury was, so take this with a pinch of salt.

My former boss, while living in Asia, damaged his knee. Using his world class health insurance he flew to Bangkok, saw an expensive surgeon who wanted to operate. He had young kids at the time so took some time to think about it, not keen to be off the leg for such a long recovery period.

In the meantime he visited a traditional Chinese doctor. This doc said no operation necessary, said the problem was due to tight thigh muscles. He prescribed massage instead.

He never had the op, is now in his late 50s and regularly goes skiing, distance running etc.

So consider holistic/Chinese medicine that will look at the whole leg structure rather than focusing on the precise location of the injury.

While in China , a man is very sexually promiscuous and does not use a condom all the time he is there.
A week after arriving back home in Sydney, he wakes one morning to find his penis covered with
                bright green and purple spots.

Horrified, he immediately goes to see a doctor. The doctor, never having seen anything like this before,
orders some tests and tells the man to return in two days for the results.

The man returns a couple of days later and the doctor says, "I've got bad news for you, you've contracted
Mongolian VD. It's very rare and almost unheard of here, we know very little about it."

The man looks a little perplexed and says, "Well, give me a shot or something and fix me up, Doc."

The doctor answers, "I'm sorry, there's no known cure. We're going to have to amputate your penis"

The man screams in horror, "Absolutely not! I want a second opinion!!!"

The doctor replies, "Well, it's your choice. Go ahead, if you want, but surgery is your only option."

The next day, the man seeks out a Chinese doctor, figuring that he'll know more about the disease.

The Chinese doctor examines his penis and proclaims, "Ah, yes, Mongolian VD. Vewy ware disease."

The guy says to the doctor, "Yeah, yeah, I already know that but what can we do?
My doctor wants to cut off my penis!"

The Chinese doctor shakes his head and laughs. "Stupid Australian docttah, always want opawate.
Make more money dat way. No need amputate!"

"Oh, thank God!" the man exclaims.

"Yes,"says the Chinese doctor, "Wait two week. Fawl off by itself.

My grandson, who plays for a local team, had his ACL operated on a few years ago. He had about 6 months unable to play, but has been back in the team since.

Thanks NaG. Good he is back. ACL is bad injury to have. My football days are done thanks to it but running/cycling is my passion now and I got back to that comfortably with torn ACL. Was interested to know if any have ACL and not had the Op, how have they got on.
