That's nothing new for a small local shopkeeper. Experienced that and more as a food shopkeeper 20+ years ago.
What got you was the lack of police interest, despite CCTV.
The big supermarkets detain a shoplifter and the police arrive within the hour (usually 30 mins.).

Do that as a small shopkeeper and you get missiles, car damaged, doors kicked-in, windows smashed-and told by the police that they still haven't got someone to attend.
