- Homophobic Chanting, Sometimes Worth Asking The Offended?
As reasonable human beings, we have had open minded conversations over the years about what it meant to be a gay man in today’s society, family attitudes, etc, etc. Not a single one of them was ever remotely offended by a chant at the football, or what could be termed as “laddishness” in general. On the contrary , the general opinion was they found it more annoying when people were offended on their behalf. One lad I know did make me laugh when he came out with the line “I did try going with girls at first, but it turned out I just love c*ck!”.
One thing that did appear to be a bone of contention though- being referred to as a “community”, like they’re all a strange breed that all know each other. Ironically, it is often those claiming offence on their behalf that refer to them with the term that, in reality, they found the most offensive. That, and being lumped in with LFBTQRT, or wherever we’re at now.
I often used to attend client meetings with a gay colleague in a previous job, and a regular conversation over a coffee post-meeting was him telling me that matey we had just met with was “one of his lot”, with me often not having any of it, and him adamant he was right. He normally was. No offence given or taken, just two friends light heartedly addressing their differences.
I am not posting an opinion about what is/isn’t offensive here, nor can I claim any authority on what should or shouldn’t be considered acceptable. It is simply anecdotal evidence I have found in my experience, where the supposed “offended” party actually wasn’t, at all.
Of course, racist chanting of any kind is of course abhorrent and should never be tolerated or accepted. That is a different thing entirely. But whilst have never sang anything about a “Chelsea Rent Boy” previously, nor will I tomorrow, it is sometimes worth asking, who was offended exactly?
