Jon, sure looks like the word "CROWN" to me; but it's not "clean", looks like it's been engraved or stamped over an already engraved surface? Based on the work I've seen come out of Hunter's engraving shop, this just doesn't seem like something they'd permit? But again, who can say as we'll never know for sure; but thanks for posting the photo, and I'm certain others will be chiming in with their thoughts and opinions. |
As to the 3-position safety, not sure about Marlin era guns but believe the 3-position safety was always available on customer request during the other production periods. I don't believe it was ever a standard issue item but again, I've no use for the 3-position safety and have spent zero time researching this device. In my opinion a three-position safety offers too much potential for accidental discharge, and a shooter would be much better off to convert his safety to a two-position manual safety if he wanted to make sure he didn't inadvertently slip his gun to "safe" while shooting targets. You didn't say if your Crown had a HOT trigger unit or not, but all the HOT triggers I've seen to date are manual two-position safeties and are not automatically activated upon cocking the gun. Just my opinion
