As to the 3-position safety, not sure about Marlin era guns but believe the 3-position safety was always available on customer request during the other production periods. I don't believe it was ever a standard issue item but again, I've no use for the 3-position safety and have spent zero time researching this device. In my opinion a three-position safety offers too much potential for accidental discharge, and a shooter would be much better off to convert his safety to a two-position manual safety if he wanted to make sure he didn't inadvertently slip his gun to "safe" while shooting targets. You didn't say if your Crown had a HOT trigger unit or not, but all the HOT triggers I've seen to date are manual two-position safeties and are not automatically activated upon cocking the gun. Just my opinion
