I'll give steaming a go & see if it raises-up any grain. The split does not go all the way through. I'm pretty sure it's only on the surface. It does need attention and believe I can wick superglue inside the cracks & clamp them. Actually, there are 2 cracks starting from where that bigger nail was driven in. My guess is, ole' granddad pounded the nails in to prevent them from worsening?

I counted the checkering lines & came up w/ 14 or 15 depending if you count the 1st or last lines?

I'm not too concerned w/ saving the orig finish. I've already taken most of the it off the stock awhile ago when I began steaming & sandng the dents out of it. Not really sure where I'm really headed w/ this project. It is a family heirloom & have been told "don't fire it w/ those Dam Barrels"! Thing is, those fore-end blems have always bothered me & have wanted to do something about them...
