Gary, did you take the wood from the metal to look at it thoroughly? I doubt the for-end would be that much oil soaked. If it were mine (and I have done this) take some sawdust from walnut or another hard wood and put a few drops of cyanoacrylate (crazy glue) in the holes. Let dry and then put the screws back in. Or put them in when the glue is still wet and rub the screws threads with a light coat of oil to act as a release agent.
