Jason, it is always better to ask about something you are not familiar with then just go and use it. If no one has tampered with the safety, meaning if they have not taken out the safety slide, your gun is as safe as the man behind it. To see that the safety is on Safe, dry fire with snap caps, open gun and see if safety slides back to Safe. Once closed gun cannot be fired without moving safety to off. By now your gun would only have the two position safety, meaning SAFE and OFF. Earlier ones had a position where the safety could be moved rearward and would always be OFF even after gun was opened. This was called a 3 position safety. Thanks for asking about the safety of your gun and good luck shooting with it.
