    Bill, some of the earlier cocking tools did not have the hole in the one end and were used on the locks to cock the hammer/s or remove the mainspring.
    I believe Phil Carr put one on the site a while back that had no hole and if the same one was used by one of the workers at Hunter Arms Co.

    The ones made today are exact reproductions of the one seen in Brophy's book.

    Neat tool to have but I find a 4" adjustable wrench easier to use in cocking the cranks.
