The book "Plans and Specifications of the LC Smith Shotgun" by Brophy has a number of drawings for both chambers an chamber reamers as well as chamber gauges included within its pages. None of the 12 gauge drawings show a chamber less than 2 3/4" in length, and the drawings go back as far as 1907. Based on my 50+ years of observations, the only chambers that are other than the factory standard are marked with the length, such as my 1933 16 gauge with 2 3/4" chambers which is so marked because 2 9//16" was standard at that time. The reamers were made with a taper of 0.005" per inch of length, which means that a chamber gauge or reamer that is off only 0.002" in diameter will indicate nearly 1/4" difference in length.
