    I thought about it some more after I hit the send button. Since bores are normally protected somehow (plugs, shellac, or varnish),
    It might not hurt to put some sort of putty or clay in the voids on the end of the barrel during the etch dunk. It wouldn't eliminate etch from getting there, but would slow it down some. Then, remove the putty to rinse and during the rusting and boiling.
