    As long as the area can be rinsed after each etch, I wouldn't worry about it.

    In fact, I had a really well known damascus refinisher tell me they remove the keels on barrels w/suspected rib leaks (many do) to completely rinse out the etchant after the refinishing process. Then, reinstall the keels prior to dressing the muzzles. Made sense to me at the time.
