Thanks for the suggestions. My wife says she believes it to be her grandfather's gun, not great grandfather. I looked up birth records online, and it appears he was born 1878, so if what she says is correct, and assuming the dating of the gun at 1898 is pretty accurate, he would have been about 20 years old at time of purchase, which sounds reasonable to me. So far, it all seems to fit together. Also, she says both the grandfather and great grandfather did blacksmithing for the town (Los Gatos, CA). The grandfather switched to auto mechanics after cars started to displace the need for blacksmithing.
