    Before you do anything, make sure of what you have. An engraved 20 gauge can be higher ticket gun, and a GREAT passed down legacy.

    May I suggest keeping it lightly oiled for the time being? If it has active rust (orange), you can use OOOO steel wool with oil to take it off. Keep the oil off of the wood. At least the gun's condition will be stabilized, and you can then take some time to decide what you want to do to it. Please don't do anything drastic without really thinking it through.

    Just a thought - the tarnish color might be from lacquer covering the receiver.

    If you can post some pictures, I'm sure there are folks here to help in your decision making. Also, if you tell where you're from, revdocdrew will undoubtedly be able to recommend a gunsmith familiar with Smiths in your area.
