    Jim:
I, and others, have repeatedly stated that remaining records contain only limited information; typically ship date, gauge, barrel length, grade, and inspector mark (depending on ship date, the remaining records may contain slightly more, or even less data). I disagree with your assessment of your experience on two points, although you may be disappointed that you learned no new information, you did not waste your money as you have confirmed the authenticity of your gun as regards grade, guage, and barrel length; very important in monetary terms considering how many surving guns today have been altered. Secondly, Hunter arms did indeed maintain detailed records, as evidenced by the surviving shipping ledgers; but unfortunately, ALL THAT REMAINS of those original records are the much less detailed shipping department records. All original, and much more detailed order and production records/books were lost or destroyed; and in fact, we are plain lucky to have what remains of the shipping records now at Cody, as William Brophy literally retrieved them from the dumpster. One of the primary reasons the LCSCA developed and continues to maintain this forum is so that we can collectively share information for purposes of expanding our knowlege base and understanding of Smith guns; various production periods, models and variations, the people who made them, and any other miscellaneous bits and pieces of this lost history we can uncover. I trust your opinion will not remain so negative once you fully understand and appreciate that every Smith owner, or collector is forced to operate within the same records limitations as you discovered with your request. Regards, Tom
