On LCs, the amount of data in the letter can be minimal (grade, barrel length, and maybe a date) to a complete description of the gun with all relevant dates, order number, and the person/company who ordered the gun.
For the time period you mention, the records are relatively full. You should be able to verify your gun's grade, complete with the letter codes and maybe learn who ordered the gun.
