Jos. Marlin took over the Hunter Arms Co in 1945 due to bankruptcy. They continued to fabricate and use the existing serial numbers of the parts on hand and the new company was called the L.C. Smith Gun Co., a subsidiary of Marlin Firearms Co.. In 1946, Marlin started their own serial numbers starting with FW S(no Regular frames made now)FW S1 was the first one made for the president of Marlin (Frank Kenna). Made shotguns in different grades and guages. In 1968 Marlin came back out with the L.C. Smith shotgun because it already owned the rights, and then it did produce only a 12 ga. In 1971 Marlin introduced a Deluxe Grade of the Field Grade gun, beavertail forend, nicer wood and a Simmonds Ventilated rib.
