    Rookie Mistake,

I have a L.C. Smith shotgun that was my
grandfathers. My son and I were invited to go skeet shooting not long ago (something we had never done). I thought this might be my one and only time to ever shoot this gun but I was uncertain of its condition. I took it to a local gunsmith who looked it over and in about two minutes said it was in fine shape. I figured that if it was in fine shape then it would certainly be in better shape after I cleaned it up some. Things were going just fine until I got into the real “guts” of it. That was when a two prong spring like thing came out and I knew I was in trouble. I have all the parts but no idea how they go back. There are a few screws in the side I would like to get replaced or at least filed smooth. The plastic end to the stock that goes against your shoulder is also cracked. The screws and plastic piece aren’t major, the main thing is I would like to shoot it. I have no intentions of ever selling it, the dollar value can’t be more than the sentimental value. I have called two reputable gunsmiths in town who have both told me to bring it buy and they would look at it. This is my dilemma. Does this sound like something a local gunsmith can fix or do I need someone who specializes in this sort of thing? If so can someone tell me the name a person I could take it or send it to? I live in Jacksonville, Florida 32210. The gun has a serial number or FW58166 with L.C.Smith stamped on each side. “Hunter Arms Company Inc. M’F’R’S Fulton, New York , U.S.A “ is on one barrel and “L.C.Smith Field Grade” is on the other barrel. When I had it apart I saw “Armor Steel Barrel” stamped on it. I would also be ever so grateful if anyone could tell me what type ammunition to shoot in it. My grandfather mainly shot quail.

    Thank You,
    George
