Sir John Moores

Why has the club never honoured this fella with a statue/stand name/something else, acknowledging his massive contribution to our history?

He was the original Roman Abramaovich, bankrolling the 'Mersey Millionaires' to sixties success, yet Sir Philip Carter the man who's main contributions seemed to be not sacking Howard Kendall and setting up the Premier League without making sure Everton were in the best position to benefit from it gets a stand named after him?

Seems to me that when the arl fella died, he left behind a legacy of hangers on running the club who were forced to face the reality of him not pumping his money in anymore and the rot has continued ever since. Was he the money man behind our success in the 80's, would we have achieved those days without him being around?

When he died he'd already handed the club over to Carter and co. some 15 years earlier, they say on their hands safe in the knowledge that Uncle John has the cash to step in if we need it....not his fault they failed to step up to the mark and modernise the structure (or invest any of their own cash) despite the club going through its must successful spell ever.

He didn't really put his own money in iirc but opened up the way for club to access cash via the banks (basically being the guarantor).

It was quite a common sight to see him arrive at Goodison, in his Chauffeur driven Rolls Royce,JM1,
He ,whilst a conservative,was something of a philanthropist too, friends with Bessie Braddock too according to my Dad.
I used to see him quite regularly and bizarrely on the now defunct S2 bus,in the late 70s,at the time I had a Girlfriend in Formby and JM lived in Freshfields,I used to get on the bus in Thornton and he was each time already on board, similarly on the return journey,he would already be on board and still be when I got off in Thornton. Always wearing his signature Crombie overcoat.Always sat downstairs, presumably a non smoker.
More up to the minute,searing insightful news as it comes in!

My dad had a newsagents in Freshfields at the time and JM loved to come in on a wander and buy loads of ice cream. One day his pa came in and told him not to serve that to JM anymore as his doctor had warned him off it.

So there's my dad having to refuse to serve one of the richest men in the country when he came in looking for his favourite treat.

How times change, people in the equivalent income bracket now, have probably never been on a bus and would have a "personal shopper" to go for their organic, wombat free, chilled dessert!
Personally,I prefer the world in which,JM got the bus to get his 99 ice cream!

Aye the shop was right next to the station from what my childhood brain can remember....I remember being fascinated by the barriers going up and down at the level crossing.

Is it the one that was owned by Peter Wright in the 80s and is now The Beer Station?

JM's cleaner lived on our road. She had a Mini Metro with the plate JM2 as I recall.

He didn't bankroll the 80's - kendall had to sell players to raise funds for certain players and the rest came through the youth team. Prize money and increased commercial revenue was then spunked up the wall from 88 onwards.

Refused to match Stoke City's £325,000 bid for Shilton from Leicester in 1974, stopping at £300,000. Imagine being outbidded by fcuking STOKE?? Shilton wanted to come to Everton.

The signing would have won us one, possibly 2 or 3 league titles. Definitely 1975, and possibly 78 and 79.

The FA cup semi v Liverpool. Couldn't see Shilton letting in either of the RS goals Lawson did. Or the ones in the League cup final replay at OT.

The only real position we were weakest was the GK. He was happy with Lawson and Davies, and Laterly George "you've dropped something" Wood.

For that reason, I'm out.

Had he signed in 74, we'd have won that 75 title. We literally threw it away.

Carlisle h and a, sheff utd (h) after leading 2-0, lost 3-2, Luton 1-2 after taking the lead.Ipswich 3-3 (h) where we couldn't hold the lead.

Just them games, 11 points down the pan.

He was the money man behind both us and the shite. He bankrolled them in the sixties. So for that alone he shouldn’t have a statue.

He didn't bank roll the shite. He recommended two accountants from his Littlewoods empire take over the business side of things at Anfield. They did and did a great job in turning them around as they were on the verge of bankruptcy.

Could be. I read somewhere that he was involved. Think he had shares in both clubs. If we’re talking statues surely it’s got to be Southall next. No one else comes even close
