Especially those of you who have been teaching for 10+ years.

Are you finding the current generation of teenagers different to previous generations? Is social media really having an impact on their communication skills, ability to focus, etc.

Saying that teenagers are surly and lazy is nothing new obviously, but are the current generation genuinely struggling more?

I think social media is a major problem but the change I'm seeing is growing levels of entitlement and a lack of respect, basically mirroring parental attitudes.

I've been teaching over twenty five years and there's definitely been a marked fall in respect for teachers as a profession.

That’s deliberate though, same with other professions it’s been a deliberate attempt to undermine these professions in order to bring about a change that will benefit the rich.

Social media hasn't helped, it's given a platform to people who normally would have kept quiet, that plus the dreaded class WhatsApp group.

Teaching is a weird job, it's like being a football manager everyone thinks they could do it better than you and that their experience at SFX in 1997 makes them some kind of educational oracle.

I'm a TA and worked in year 11 as a 1 to 1 before the first lockdown. A lot of the children were rude to staff and each other as well as not being bothered in class. They had a special unit as most secondary schools seem to have and a lot just walked out of lessons and went to sit in there because they were bored.

As they were in different ability sets there was a difference in behaviour between ability levels. The pupil I was with was good at the 3 sciences and in the top groups and by and large the pupils worked. English and PSHE were a different matter completely

Concentration times is much less than it was 25 years ago. We have banned kids having phones and not only is this better for learning it has also massively impacted the amount of social media based shite we are dealing with. The thing is, social media has impacted parents too, they see something online, believe it to be true and argue. My lads dissertation on the impact of Social Media and ego depletion captures it perfectly. Bombarded with small snappy messages that are, in the main, wrong and dangerous.

Kids are kids and always will be, the big problem is parents who think their kids can do no wrong and will constantly undermine everything a school tries to do and demand things that are just not possible nor plausible.

Can’t say that teenagers have always been great communicators but previous generations could string more than a few words together. You can certainly tell the kids who are limited to screen times to those who aren’t.

Someone posted below about an article on Granada Reports last night based in Salford. It was a cracking initiative and they had a number of their brightest kids on to talk about it. It was horrific listening to them, they could barely string a sentence together and these were kids that are doing very well.

Similarly, I attend Chester University once a year to sit on a panel and listen to students present the results of certain studies that they do, the standard is abysmally poor with maybe the odd one looking like they may have a bright future - and these are kids at University.

I don't want to sound like Alan Sugar but fuck me the future is bleak with what I've seen coming through and mobile phones / social media etc is to blame for that IMO

Your second paragraph - how long have you been doing that and is the standard worse than for example 5-10 years ago?

The last 3 years so in fairness I can't compare with 10 years ago. I include my own daughter in this as well.

I reckon for the most driven of kids it will be much easier to stand out these days as from what I see most of them appear disinterested unless it's something they can have immediately.

I was around when mobile phones first made an appearance, I'd been teaching about 6 years at the time, but yes, to answer your question.

For a time, txt spk was constantly appearing in work submitted by kids. A former head of English argued that all languages develop in time (make of that what you will). Upon doing exam marking these past few years, it doesn't seem to have made much of an appearance on the papers I've seen, in all fairness.

Once social media started getting mainstream some 15-20 years ago or so, it very quickly became a serious issue, with kids falling out over absolute dogshit and some kids obviously getting bullied mercilessly online after school finished. This had a massive effect for some kids.

I felt for a time there were serious peaks in in that, although for some kids it was just another distraction, it was at times all consuming for others. Things would flare up at break or lunch because of a misunderstanding like someone posting the 'wrong' emoji, meaning PM lessons would massively go to shit quite quickly.

I have been out a few years now, but at the time, I genuinely think the effects in terms of focus and concentration were generally negative and serious for some, not all.

I think you have to factor in Covid as well here. I would think this cohort of teenagers had some key developmental years disrupted by lockdowns etc which presents some specific challenges which might not be usual when you look across a longer timeframe. Not a teacher myself like.

Agreed that has to be taken into consideration. Kids didn’t miss that much school though. How long were the schools completely shut for? A few weeks wasn’t it.

my son missed a large chunk of year 6 (leaving junior) and a large proportion of year 7 (1st year secondary).

Loads more than that. From original outbreak mid-March until at least June, but in most cases not back until the following September. Then there was a second one post-Christmas, which was up until March in most cases.

Was it. As you can tell I can’t remember it too well. So it was more like 3-4 months of schooling missed in 2020?

The second school closure in early 2021 you mentioned has left a complete blank.

My lad was 6 and me and the missus were both working full-time from home for the duration, so from memory it was around 300 years.

Don't think it's just the education element but the socialisation and how they "developed" or didn't as human beings.
