Imperial Weights and Measures

What do most of you on here use for your weight and height. Even though it is now many years ago since Metric was introduced to the UK I bet most still talk in feet and inches,stones and pounds and gallons of petrol.

Speed:
• miles per hour

Distance:
• Long distance + running: kilometres
• Long distance + not running: miles
• Short distance: metres, feet, inches

Temperature:
• degrees centigrade

Mass:
• Weighing people: stones, pounds
• Not weighing people: kilos, grams, tonnes, tons

Volume:
• Beer: pints
• Milk (cow): pints
• Milk (vegan): litres
• Not beer or milk: litres

Feet and Inches
Stone and Pounds

I thought EVERYONE still did this but over the last few years I seem to be in a minority.

Litres for Petrol (because its priced that way)

CM and MM for any DIY work

Miles and MPH for driving (because everything is labelled that way)

Most of the world uses metric.
The USA uses imperial.
The UK mocks the USA for using imperial despite employing a hybrid of both systems.

Kilometres for distance travelled. Never miles. Easier to calculate, time and estimate on the ground. Use it for walking, running and paddling. 62 double steps for 100m. Counted off over a max of 500m with little toggles on a shoestring or the compass lanyard. Called 'pacing' and used in poor visibility or darkness. More paces with a heavier bag or in snow.

Not so weights but lengths.
I seem to remember by the steeple fountain in town by the museum/art gallery there are lengths of various size metal strips which were used for official measurements.

Generally Imperial units.
But temperatures in Celsius, not Fahrenheit.

I use Centigrade when it’s cold (“ blimey it’s minus 3 out there”) and Fahrenheit when it’s hot (“Phew what a scorcher, it’s 85 in the shade”). I’m not really sure at what temperature it changes. Maybe it’s because outside it being boiling or freezing it’s not worth talking about.

Aye, it's about what everyone else is using and therefore what is sensible/understandable in that context. People who get militant about units of measurement are whoppers.

I will say the American insistence on "cups" of stuff when writing recipes is infuriating though, the weirdos.

Another thing I see a lot in American recipes online, for instance baking a cake - one pack of cake mix. Or some sort of casserole will ask for a tin of condensed soup. Aren’t we supposed to be making the fucking thing here, friends?

Are you a bot monitoring my WhatsApp?? The reason I ask is I was messaging a mate about this earlier today, so odd it has come up again.

NB my mate uses Kg to weigh himself when obviously the only way I can tell he is a fatty is if he tells me it on stones and pounds! Or by looking at him.
