Kilometres for distance travelled. Never miles. Easier to calculate, time and estimate on the ground. Use it for walking, running and paddling. 62 double steps for 100m. Counted off over a max of 500m with little toggles on a shoestring or the compass lanyard. Called 'pacing' and used in poor visibility or darkness. More paces with a heavier bag or in snow.
