This is the end point. Will get people clutching their pearls but no one wants to address the reasons for it.
To be clear, it is horrendous, but put people into desperate, grim, dead-end existences where there's zero hope or prospects for escape and you can't act surprised when societal norms - like not thumping NHS staff - break down. You can see it everywhere - shoplifting, drinking/drugs, gambling, theft of mobile phones. These are all symptoms of people robbed of any meaning, hope or dignity and living one sensation to the next.
There's no reason for them to "play the game" and try to be members of a polite society they increasingly see as closed off from them and often actively hostile.
As ever, the architects behind it all aren't getting slapped. They're just laughing and counting their money.
