The Phoenician Scheme (Snide) - Sigh…. Yet another sludge of convolutedly boring plot involving an invented country and loads of randomly assorted characters that you don't give a monkeys about yet watch shuffle about in a lovingly created Anderson toy town. The design is as good as he has ever done and Del Toro is ace but FFS Wes, turn it down a a bit, simplify it a touch and lets have a bit of warmth again 5/10
Live Aid Documentary (iPlayer) - tails off in ep 3 with Live8 but as a child of the 80s I enjoyed this nostalgia fest. The political echoes show some stark differences between how migrant populations in a warzone where considered differently to how they are today - at least before the narrative has seemingly shifted in the last fortnight. Geldof actually comes across really well, accepting he is driving the story himself here, but throws new light on some of the vaguely unsettling white saviour nonsense he did showing up there every five minutes 7/10
Barry Lyndon (Cinema) - the 4k 50th anniversary reissue. Never seen this one before. Why? Probably one of the lesser considered lights of the Kubrick ouevre, possibly due to it’s length and subject matter in between Clockwork Orange and The Shining. Genuinely one of the best pieces of cinema I've ever seen - the cinematography and the lighting is unreal. Massive expansive panning shots like oil paintings. Ryan O'Neal surprisingly decent and the story is pretty entertaining despite the languid length 10/10
