Burial place for Dorothy ELLIOTT

Hello

I am trying to find where my 3x-great-grandmother, Dorothy ELLIOTT, is buried.

She died on 31 May, 1870 at Worston near Yealmpton. The burial records for the Parish of Yealmpton state that she was buried on 5 June, 1870.

I have checked with St. Bartholomews's Church in Yealmpton and they have no record of the burial.

I am now thinking that she may be buried in one of the municiple cemeteries in Plymouth.

Ford Park Cemetery would appear to be a likely candidate, given that it opened in 1848. However, I have not found it easy to find out when the other cemeteries in Plymouth opened, so are there other cemeteries I should check?

I am also trying to find the place of burial for her daughter Ann GERRY (d. 1890) and son-in-law James GERRY (d. 1886), whom I believe Dorothy was living with at the time of her death.

Dorothy's son, his wives, and his son are buried at St. Mary and All Saints Church (see my previous message), but she does not appear to be buried there.

Have you checked with local council re burials? may be plans of burials 1870 destroyed lost years ago in church vestry.
Would think she would be there, perhaps with parents?
Where was her husband buried?

The Plymouth City Council holds the indices for Ford Park Cemetery from 1849-1883 in their search room. This would work for Dorothy ELLIOTT, but not her daughter and son-in-law.

Outside those dates, you need to go to the Ford Park Cemetery Trust, and it costs £15 per search regardless of success. However, an added complication is that to pay that, I would need to phone them (from New Zealand) and give them my credit card number. I may end up doing this and see what comes back (her daughter and son-in-law may be in the same grave, and I would get them as a bonus).

Dorothy was baptised in Staverton, and her parents are buried there.

Dorothy's husband died in Totnes and is buried there in the municipal cemetery. Given that her burial is recorded in the Yealmpton Parish register, I doubt she is buried in Totnes, but to cover all bases, I emailed the Totnes Council today.

The Devon Family History Society has the burials for Ford Park cemetery 1848-1880 in the members area of the website. Dorothy Elliot is not listed on this.
My feeling is that she was buried at Yealmpton as stated in the burial register, unless there was a non conformist burial ground in yealmpton

Thanks for that, Jeff; I missed it on the website.

The reason I was looking in the municipal cemeteries is that is what happened for her husband in Totnes; he is recorded in the burial register for the parish but is buried in the Totnes municipal cemetery.

I think you are probably right about Yealmpton.

Dorothy Elliott was buried at St Batholomew, Yealmpton on 5th June 1870, the record in the parish burial register is available to view on Findmypast. You could access on the Findmypast site and pay to download using micropayments if you do not have a subscription or access Findmypast for free in all LDS Centres, many archives and libraries worldwide. Digging deeper into your enquiry I learnt that Dorothy, Ann & James deaths were all registered in the Plympton St Mary registration district. Yealmpton is included in this district.

A search in the Online Genealogical Index (OGI) shows that there are no burials anywhere online for Yealmpton post 1883 & the Devon Heritage Centre (Records Office) also does not have the register of burials at Yealmpton post 1883.

Therefore the conclusion is that is must still be in the hands of the incumbant or less likely lost.

My next move would be to contact the the parish again.

Yealmpton Parish Registers are available with images on Findmypast. Original registers are held at The Box, Plymouth.
