Richard Pearse/Pearce

Captain Richard Pearse, Foreign Trade, born 1786 at Instow, son of John and Elizabeth nee Diamont/Diamond. Richard married Susanna Berry of Appledore, Devon, sometime prior to 1814 when his first child, also Richard Pearse, baptised at Appledore in April 1814. Any help to establish where and when would be greatly appreciated.

Have you checked Barnstaple and Bideford records? Churches in Northam and Appledore founded after the dates you have. They are the nearest towns, Genuki site has details.

check other parishes along the Taw river too.

Genuki has a list of Fische, showing Richard jnr baptism at Northam, 9/5/1814.
Also found another baptism , this time of Anne 26.5.1784, could be the sister of Richard born 1786, this time at the independent chapel at Appledore.
Her parents listed as John Pearse (gent) and Sarah, of Lincombe, baptised Lincombe. So perhaps Richard (born 1786, baptised there too, but not on the registers.
Not sure whether Lincombe is a house, or a place.

Lincombe near Ilfracombe, could have been a manor house.

Sorry, I seem to have confused things, it is the marriage of Richard Pearse and Susanna Berry that I am trying to establish. Richard came from Instow and Susanna from Appledore. I have looked at Northam Appledore and Instow marriages without success.

How do you know that Susanna's surname was Berry?

There is a banns entry for a Susanna Berry and Richard ROSS in Northam/Appledore in 1810 but no corresponding marriage in the parish register.

Interesting there is no marriage entry for Susanna Berry and Richard Ross, perhaps it did not take place for some reason. I did look for children of such a union, but nothing came to light. There is the family of Samuel Ross at Appledore he could have been a brother of Richard. Richard Ross was a mariner - did something happen to him.

I have an ancestor who was married under one name,
1822 and went back to the church the following year with first child and was using a different surname. He was baptised under the first surname, as well. Some time later they had a child born within the registration period, so we got the mothers maiden name and worked back from that, and found the marriage with the different surname. It was further research , which established the ownership of a property which revealed that his parents were not married, and a statement by a former employer which gave the "alleged fathers surname" as the one which was used at the baptism.
I have since worked out the mother, and traced her line, but with no Christian name of the father am completely stuck!!!!

In your case it is much earlier, so would suggest you look into the other name which has turned up as well. Sometimes you have to go sideways. See if this couple had other children etc.

Pleased to help. I should add that we had searched high and low for his baptism, under the name we knew, for ages!! I had suspected the marriage being the year before the first child, and said jokingly "perhaps the vicar knew something we didn't"!!
Have been fortunate to find the house mentioned in the documents and visit when it was up for auction, but could not buy, too much work, had not been touched since they lived there/built it in 1840s !!
