Honiton

Anyone else researching the GolEsworthy Family? In particular, William, a Tailor of Silver Street, Honiton and his wife Mary nee Bartin. We are particularly interested in where their daughter Elizabeth Sarah was between 1881 (when we found her as Elizabeth Tucker at 4 Brook Street East, Teignmouth with John Tucker and her daughter Bertha Golesworthy) and 1921 when she turns up in Lancashire with her grandson William.

Any more details re her marriage?
Bertha her daughter appears on Exeter as a servant in 1891 (birthplace given as exeter, but could have been assumed by her employer)

Thanks for coming back Judith, We worked on the Exeter Bertha for some time however we are now reasonably confident that Elizabeth's daughter "our" Bertha was at a training facility in Monmouthshire in 1891. Her son William was born there in 1893. It is with him that Elizabeth is living in 1921 in Leyland Lancashire. She is recorded firstly as Elizabeth Golesworthy which is crossed out and then recorded as Elizabeth Tucker, born in Honiton, Devon. We know Bertha Golesworthy, Elizabeth and John Tucker were all together in Teignmouth in 1881 and Elizabeth is recorded as "wife". We have no way of knowing if John was Bertha's father (not recorded on her baptism or birth) and no idea where Elizabeth is between 1884 (when reports of an assault on Bertha were reported in the newspapers) and 1921. (Bertha came up north and married hence William being in Leyland). Any help would be much appreciated.

Have you spotted that the name is being spelt differently in Blackburn entries? Gouldsworthy, when Joseph is registered, and when they John and Bertha married in 1894.
Honiton spelling for lots of others living there is Golesworthy, but moving to different location accents are heard differently.
Bertha Pomfret died 1934 at 60.

Thanks Judith - and yes - there are so many different spellings - including Golsdworthy which is clearly (or not!) a simple misspelling. Gole Gold Gols and Gals so far to name a few. "Our" Bertha was born 18th June 1873 in Honiton and died just short of her 100th birthday on 3rd December 1972 in Leyland. She was my Great Grandmother who I was lucky enough to meet. We don't know what became of her mother Elizabeth after 1884, whether she too came up North or whether she was just visiting at the time of the 1921 census. We do believe that she may have died in Leyland in 1930.

I obviously picked the wrong one. It appears that William Bertha's son was born in Newport Workhouse, Monmouthshire, on 3.4.1893.
William Golesworthy the tailor (of Honiton) was a widower by 1881.
Might be worth getting the 1930 death cert for Elizabeth, it would give you details of who registered the death and where she was living at the time.

Thanks Judith Yes, that's the right family. Bertha was at the St John the Baptist Mission Home, Monmouthshire in 1881 and William was born a couple of years later. He was then baptised back in Woodbury (where John Tucker was born according to the 1881 census). We wondered whether Elizabeth and John stayed in Woodbury after 1884 (when they were mentioned in the newspaper articles) but have been so far unable to locate either of them until Elizabeth is recorded in Leyland in 1921. Also, yes, the only way of confirming the 1930 death would be via the cert. Would still be good to fill in the elusive gap years though. Take care Carol
