Looking for a marriage

In the interval 1817 - 1835 Winifred and Samuel had 9 children baptised in Ilsington. Earlier children baptised with name Conybeare (or some variation) and later children with name Pengelly. In census Winifred born Ilsington about 1789,and a Winifred Frost was baptised in the parish in that year to George Frost and Winifred Perryman. Winifred Frost had siblings with marriages recorded, but cannot find marriage for Winifred herself. Unclear as to whether Samuel might have used name Conybeare or Pengelly. Is it possible they weren't married? How likely would that be if the church seemed willing to baptise their children as if they were?

Judith, thank you for all your ideas. Just on the Perryman front.

Winifred Frost and Samuel Conybeare/Pengelly would be my 3rd Great-Grandparents. George Frost and Winifred Perryman my 4th Great-Grandparents. Richard Perriman (baptised 1721) and Winifred Bowden my 5th Great-Grandparents. And, if I've got things right, Thomas Perrymen and Grace Pitts my 6th Great-Grandparents. And Richard baptised 1721 had a brother William baptised 1715 who married Elizabeth Stook. Does that make sense?

Am still looking at the Conybeare/Pengelly stuff.

Yes we share the 6th great grandparents!!!
Have you looked at the actual parish records for Ilsington? re the missing marriage?
I have outlined in other comments that I think Samuel was apprenticed, his master died, he stayed on a bit with the masters daughter and her husband, then ran away and joined the army using his mothers maiden name ( kept using that so he could get his pension in that name). Came back and he and Winifred together. Depends if she was living somewhere else perhaps as a servant, so it could be a parish not on I.G.I.

George Frost & Winnifred Perryman married 7th October 1772 at Ilsington

Thanks for posting. Yes, I saw that. The Frost family seem firmly established in Ilsington, six children I think, three marrying either in Ilsington, Ashburton or Bovey. And then there is Winifred with Samuel having nine children and the two of them living the rest of their lives there. But no marriage, and the church apparently happy to baptise their children as if they were. I just wonder how usual that was.

there was also a baptist church in Bovey, some of my lot associated with that. Some records in Exeter but a bit sparse

Samuel says he was born Newton St Cyres on one of the census, would suggest you look for "Samuel" baptism between 1786 and 1790, in that parish, see what surnames you get. Says he is a Chelsea pensioner later census.
My ancestor is Charlotte Perriman born 1797 daughter of richard Perriman and Susannah Bowden, , so guess we are related sideways!!way back!!

The Newton St Cyres thing is strange. Samuel has place of birth in census as: 1841 Devon; 1851 Not Known; 1861 Newton St Cyres. Then in 1823 a William Conybeare pops up in Ilsington and declares at a Settlement Examination that he was born in Newton St Cyres, later repeated in census. A John Conybeare also appears in Ilsington census giving place of birth Newton St Cyres. So three Conybeares living in same area of Ilsington (Coldeast/Leverton) at similar times all saying they come from Newton St Cyres. But for baptisms in Newton St Cyres and surrounding parishes I found nothing. A real puzzle and I don't know where to go with that.

YOur Richard Perriman is the younger brother of my 4 times great grandfather William Perriman. WOW.

Another name to conjure with, was he using the name Pingle when he joined up in 1806, born Newton St Cyres, listed as chelsea pensioner, on Census, and on National archives site as Pingle.

Reason he changed his name, he was an apprentice who ran away and joined the army, after the first master died, gave his mothers maiden name, came back to Ilsington and applied for settlement. Would be useful to have sight of the full document.
Pengelly spelt phoneticallyish Pingle, Possibility that they never married in devon.

Of all the variations of spelling for the name Pengelly - are there are many - Pingle wasn't one of them! And just on a quick check I haven't found any baptisms for Pingle in Devon for a likely period. So it does look like a made-up name. And there Ilsington and Newton Sy Cyres connections. Thanks for putting me on to that. I shall get the documents from TNA/findmypast/Devon Records Office.

Probably spelt phonetically, if he had a broad Devon Accent goodness knows what it sounded like! We met an elderly gentleman once, in Ottery St Mary ,DEvon, and he chatted away, we could not understand a word of it! He went off quite happy after his chat, and we just looked at each other!!
The copy of the settlement order should be useful as there is usually more on there than shown on line.
