Jeff, thankyou for all your work on Devon Mental Hospital (County Asylum). Several members of my family spent some time there. In particular my 2xGreat Grandma who was first admitted in 1904. She was depressive/sucidal. Family says she never recovered from the death of her eldest son in a gold mine in Colorado and the death of another son in the Boer War. Her hospital notes are extensive and detailed. The doctor saw her on a regular basis. The doctors and nurses tried very hard with her but she was not an easy patient. Shouting, spitting, refusing food etc. After a couple of years she died but unusually for the time her body was removed by family and she lies in the family plot.
